The BE Legacy of Excellence Awards is dedicated to honoring community heroes who pave the way for future generations. Our mission is to celebrate Black excellence while providing critical support to students through academic recognition and scholarships.

Our History: A Legacy of Excellence Since 1985
Founded in 1985 in the heart of Milwaukee, the BE Legacy of Excellence Awards began as a visionary effort to recognize a 'Black Excellence' that often went unsung. Over four decades, our commitment has evolved from a single ceremony into a profound movement of community empowerment. A pivotal milestone in our journey was the creation of the Louvenia Johnson Scholarship Fund, established to bridge the gap for aspiring students and ensure that the legacy of our community heroes translates into a brighter future for the next generation of leaders.
Mr. Nathan Conyers
In 1985, three visionary business owners established the Black Excellence Awards Ceremony.
Their mission was to honor the heroes of the Milwaukee community.
For more than four decades, this awards program has stood as a pillar of recognition, gratitude, and hope.What began as a simple effort to spotlight everyday heroes has grown into a cherished tradition—one that honors individuals whose quiet strength, bold leadership, and remarkable service continue to make our community stronger.Year after year, this program has celebrated people who give of themselves not for applause, but because they believe in the power of compassion, integrity, and collective responsibility.
It recognizes teachers who shape futures, volunteers who help carry burdens, and business owners who provide service, innovation, and creativity. As we celebrate 41 years of honoring excellence, we also acknowledge a legacy that continues to inspire new leaders, new dreamers, and new change-makers. The BE Awards: Legacy of Excellence is more than an awards ceremony; it is a testament to the enduring spirit of a community that believes in lifting one another up.The success of the BE Awards: Legacy of Excellence is also connected to the more than 25 years of commitment from our media partner, WISN Channel 12.
